CONTRACT AWARDED FOR NEW SECTION OF HWY 97A

SALMON ARM – The $10,855,656 contract for the new four-lane section of Highway 97A from Pleasant Valley Cross Road to Lansdowne Road has been awarded to Hoban Equipment Limited of Salmon Arm.

“This much needed road work is made possible thanks to working with our federal partners through the Building Canada Plan,” says Shuswap MLA George Abbott. “This four-laning project will greatly increase safety along this important stretch of Highway 97A, while also providing much needed jobs in our region.”

The section of Okanagan Highway 97A to be reconstructed is adjacent to the City of Armstrong and within the Township of Spallumcheen, 16 km north of Vernon. Work is expected to begin in mid-January, 2010 and is expected to be completed September 2011.

The road construction includes 4 kilometres of four-lane widening with the addition of 2.5 metre shoulders, flush median and rumble strips. Intersection functionality at Smith Road will be improved by constructing a protected tee intersection with an acceleration lane in the northbound direction.  There will also be improvements to intersection geometry, sight lines, left turn bays and deceleration lanes at five other intersections.

The project is funded under the Province’s three-year, $14-billion capital infrastructure program that will create up to 88,000 jobs and help build vital public infrastructure in every region of B.C. Since October 2008, over $4.4 billion in infrastructure projects have been announced across British Columbia, which are estimated to create more than 28,000 jobs over the life of the projects.
